About the Black in Historic Preservation Grant
The goal of the Black In Historic Preservation Grant is to support a Black student studying historic preservation and allied fields and a Black-led organization (non-profits or fiscally sponsored) preserve Black Heritage Sites.
The organization will receive a grant, thus enabling them to leverage receiving a grant for future funding. The organization must commit to hiring a Black student to receive the grant. And, the student can list the grant on their CV/resume as an award for future funding.

A representative from your organization is in the Black Preservationists Directory by the time of application. Apply here: https://www.blackinhistpres.com/
Must be actively working to preserve a historic site. Landmark status is not a requirement. Project Narrative will address this criteria.
Tasks associated with the following preservation activities of a historic site are eligible: Building/Site Restoration, Site Stabilization, Advocacy for the Protection of the Site, Feasibility Studies, Preservation Planning, and Landmarking.
Priority for well-developed internship projects. Internship project description will address this criteria.
Priority for financial need. Operating Budget review will address this criteria.
For pay equity for the intern, Financial Match, at minimum, required. Exceeding a match preferred.
One grant award per organization that covers the compensation of one intern only.

A Black student who is currently studying in a program that will lead to a certificate or degree in architecture, historic preservation, history, archaeology, materials conservation, journalism, and communications. Resume will address this criteria.
Student must work with a Black-led non-profit or fiscally-sponsored organization that is preserving a Black historic site.
Intern may work remotely, in-person, or a hybrid of the two.
Priority for financial need.
US citizen.
Student cannot start the internship/fellowship no sooner than May 1, 2023.
Student must complete their internship/fellowship funded by this grant by May 31, 2024.

Help us raise $6,000 to award 2 Black-led organizations up to $3,000 each. The inaugural grant of $1,500 received by the African American Heritage Preservation Fund was funded by k. kennedy Whiters, RA from wrkSHäp | kiloWatt, LLC, the home of Black in Historic Preservation. From 2011 - 2020, kennedy lived, worked, and volunteered in Seattle. Some of that volunteering included reviewing grant applications for historic preservation projects. She was happy to pay it forward with this Grant Fund. Can you make a contribution?
