Using the framework / implementation outline of "transformative justice," Black in Historic Preservation presents methods for real change that challenge the status quo in historic preservation. The guide incorporates feedback BiHP received from Black preservationists across the US on how to preserve historic sites associated with Black people and how to preserve/sustain Black preservationists in the field.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the passage of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act, our 2026 programming theme is "Been Preservation," which highlights Black people who have been active in historic preservation, from enslaved Black people to early-20th-century Black historic figures.

Join us to learn tips on how to write about historical traumas, such as chattel enslavement, in ways that are reparative and healing. k. kennedy Whiters, Founder of Black in Historic Preservation and (un)Redact the Facts, will share her research and key findings from “Redacted: a Survey,” the study she launched in 2023 on grammar and language in interpretations about historical traumas. Participants will also have the opportunity to take the survey and add their perspective to this pioneering study.
