“Transformative Preservation”: Black in Historic Preservation’s Guide Launch
Are you the leader of a majority-White historic preservation organization and want to practice your mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion?
Are you a Black person in preservation and are seeking tools to help you assert yourself with other preservationists?
Join us for the launch of Black in Historic Preservation's guide for transformative action in historic preservation:
Transformative Preservation:
Towards a Sustainable, Equitable Historic Preservation Culture
Using the framework of "transformative justice," Black in Historic Preservation (BiHP) presents methods for real change that challenge the status quo in historic preservation in the Transformative Preservation Guide. This interactive guide incorporates feedback BiHP received from Black preservationists across the US on how to preserve historic and heritage sites with known association with the diverse experiences of Black people in the US and how to preserve/sustain Black preservationists and the sites we preserve.
This event is a must-attend for anyone interested in preserving Black historic sites and collaborating with Black preservationists. Purchase the guide with your ticket to be the first to receive the 130+ page interactive digital document as early as the second week of June 2026.
Don't miss out on this enlightening discussion!
Presented by Black in Historic Preservation Founder + Program Director k. kennedy Whiters, RA
Who is this for?
For preservationists, architects, students, grassroots advocates, cultural workers, historians, archivists, professors teaching historic preservation and allied fields such as archival science and archaeology, and anyone interested in learning about transformative preservation strategies.
Why is the “Transformative Preservation Guide” available for a fee rather than free?
Generally speaking, most things in life that are “free” to the public are not technically free. They are underwritten by large donations, tax dollars, and/or by institutions that can afford to do so. This guide is not. Purchasing the guide supports Black in Historic Preservation in practicing one of its core values: Pay Equity. Paying for the guide allows for Black in Historic Preservation to compensate its primary author and have funds available for future events and resources. Thank you.
